Daily Lent for today (it's been a while!)
Would you believe that today radically influenced what would later become Christianity? Today Julius Caesar was assassinated in the forum 2061 years ago. He changed Rome from a Republic into a burgeoning Empire. His adopted son (and nephew) Augustus was the first true emperor, and the styles, leadership, governance of Rome took off under his rule -- for good or for ill. In Luke 2:1, Augustus is mentioned, so he makes it into our own Scripture. Christianity began to grow under the leadership of later emperors. The fact that Christian did grow under an empire, not something else, is really significant -- because we see Jesus resist that empire often, up to the point of death.
What ways are YOU being called to resist the seduction of the empire today?
